This subject covers the essential knowledge that clinicians need to manage a ward, unit, service or clinical division,and introduces the concept of management theory and practice in health care settings. It addresses the basic competencies to fulfil a managerial role and the broader context in which a clinical manager operates. It enables students to develop effective skills in managing themselves, other people, teams and finances. Topics covered include the difference between leading and managing, management and leadership styles, team communication, leading and developing teams, delivering constructive feedback to staff, recruitment and retention in relation to generational issues, managing diversity and dysfunctional people, understanding the main financial statements, and how to construct and analyse a budget. An emphasis is placed on describing strategies to deal with a range of common performance issues. Recommend contemporary and validated strategies appropriate to managing self, individuals, teams, complex staffing issues and financial resources in a clinical environment; D. Create a variety of ways in which complex issues can be effectively communicated for a variety of target audiences. This subject also contributes specifically to the following graduate attributes: Appraise local, national and international networks to enhance translation of latest evidence into practice. (1.2) Influence leadership and advocacy, within scope of practice, for person centred care.
