Fear in Popular Culture

We are studying the ways in which Cold War fears (atomic weapons, communism, etc.) show up in popular culture from the 1950s and 1960s. This exercise is designed to have you analyze how todays fears are depicted in popular culture. Please select a recent television show or movie and then write a response to the following questions: 1. Identify the movie/show you analyzed, and briefly summarize the plot. 2. Describe the fear(s) you think are reflected in your show/movie. What are the real-life events that are driving these American fears or concerns? Why do you think Americans worry about certain issues today? 3. Analyze how your television show/movie deals with the fear(s) you have identified. In your analysis, discuss the type of show/movie you selected, and how that might play a role (for example, is it comedy, drama, suspense, horror, etc.). Is fear obvious, or is it implied? How is fear used as part of entertainment or escapism in the show/movie you selected? 4. Conclude your analysis with an assessment of how fear functions today vs. the 1950s. Are our fears significantly different from those of the Cold War era? Is our more sophisticated popular culture more effective at helping us manage our fears?
