The film “Exit through the gift shop”, Critical pluralism and Post modern Art practice Research Paper

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp2″]

The 2010 documentary film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, chronicles the rise of the street artist known as Banksy, contextualizing his work amongst other street artists and performers. Although not explicitly associated with “Critical Pluralism” the work of Banksy and other artists like him challenges conventional notions of art practice, calling into questions issues of legitimate and non-legitimate art practise, authenticity, and the cynicism of the art market. Please comment on the relevancy and legitimacy of the work portrayed in the film in terms of one or two of these post modern characteristics.

Background (course description):

For the first time in history, since 1960s, we are faced with the sobering yet liberating fact that there is no governing style in architecture and interior design. The course will interrogate the cultural influences that have created this environment by introducing the 20th century cultural theory and non architectural writings centred around the themes of structuralism, postmodernism and post structuralism. The course will trace links between current architectural discourse and parallel cultural phenomena, with an emphasis on post-modernist culture and the overlap and cross-pollination that occurs between the visual arts and the design disciplines.
