Optimal Aging in Late Adulthood
There are many physical, cognitive, and social-emotional changes that occur in late adulthood. Some changes related to aging cannot be avoided: the brain and nervous system begin to deteriorate as more and more neurons die; the sensory system declines, as do the cardiovascular and circulatory systems; fine motor and gross motor movements are less refined than earlier in life; physical appearance changes; and sexual responsiveness declines. Other changes such as illness, loss of independence, the death of peers and intimate partners, retirement, limited income, and victimization may impact the quality of life of older adults. Strategies for mitigating some of these changes can include working on a daily crossword puzzle, volunteering, participating in an exercise class, or moving into a residential community or nursing home. Individuals from various cultures cope with the changes related to aging in different ways. Consider how one might achieve optimal aging and how cultural experiences and gender play a role.
