The novel Obasan depicts the experience of Nomi, a Japanese-Canadian, from childhood to adulthood. In this paper, you will analyze the book from several different psychological perspectives using the theory and concepts discussed in class and in your textbook.

Describe Japanese culture by identifying at least 2 examples of holistic thinking and 2 examples of interdependent behaviors (specify how they match the Marcus/Kitayama model). Support these ideas by quoting passages describing actual behavior or thought.
Using the different types of nonverbal behavior discussed in class/text, describe different Japanese nonverbal behaviors, again by quoting specific passages.
Define and discuss stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination and give specific examples of these concepts from the novel. Quote particular passages. Most of this behavior will pertain to the Canadians. Is it also evident among the Japanese? Remember, stereotypes and ethnocentrism are universal. Define and give examples of flexible and inflexible ethnocentrism.
Gender is an important element in all cultures. Does Japanese culture appear to have high or low differentiation between men and women? Give at least 3 examples to support your answer.
There are certain patterns of immigration discussed in the Ward text (chap 2 and 9). Relate those patterns to the experiences of the Japanese in Obasan. Also discuss the process of acculturation and how that is evident in the issei, nesei and sansei generations (define these as well).
