First/Second paragraph
You need to begin to discuss the central idea or striking features of the passage. Try to link these, with the way in which the writer illuminates these central ideas for us.
E.g. an interesting narrative perspective, a disturbing event, a particular state of mind, a character revealing or concealing something.
Keep monitoring the effect on the read of what you are observing.
Third paragraph
mention the structure. Where are we ‘taken’ in this passage? What are we told about event that lead up to or away from the moments described in the extract?
Are there patterns you can see in the words? The sentences? the paragraphs? Is there a balance between dialogue and description? What is the effect of each? Do we move from light to dark? General to specific? Past to present? unpleasant to pleasant? etc.
Fourth paragraph
Sweep up anything that is left. have you commented on diction, imagery, mood?
Conclusion: Reflect on the overall effect of the passage and come to some conclusions. Does it have universal meaning? Is it a successful piece of writing? What drew you in/kept you out?
