In the novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys constructs a world based on a system of binaries. It is these binaries that move the novel along and help create some of the most climatic interactions. She sets up a world of white versus black, man versus woman, and most dominantly colonized versus colonizer. Many of these interactions are seen through the exchanges between Rochester and Antoinette. However there is one character who does not fit into the binary system of the novel; Christophine. She is a black woman, yet tied down to no man and answers to no one. In a time where women were dependent and reliant on men, Christophine is not. She commands respect and even fear from people on the island due to her power of Obeah. Her role of Obeah also gives her the only link to nature and the natural world in the novel. It is through her knowledge and use of plants and roots that she is able to make the potion that makes Rochester a ?zombie? thus effectively becoming an ?other? figure in the story who is manipulating a ?subject? figure. Finally, Christophine shows the full extent of her own knowledge and vocal authority in her exchange with Rochester and how she is able to efficiently and effectively break him down. Christophine exercises a powerful influence in the novel and represents Rhys? defiance of the colonial status quo. She is in herself an anomaly in the story and is able to act and live in her own controlled sphere that is outside the dualities of binaries set into the novel.
