Goal: Focus on the narrator as storyteller
Consider the ways in which ?Everyday Use? generates sympathy for the narrator and Maggie. How
does the narrator balance humor, concrete details (especially images of rural poverty that are
unpleasant or unsettling), and other storytelling devices to generate and sustain the reader?s
sympathy? Avoid focusing exclusively on plot and remember to consider a variety of the tools and
techniques that the narrator might employ to generate and sustain the reader?s interest. Part II. Longer essay (40 points; about 500 – 550 words, quotations included)
Assignment format:
Write an essay that follows academic essay format, including a brief introduction and
conclusion. Remember to provide at least one quotation for each story discussed.
Goal: Using textual detail to support a comparative thesis
Comparative essay question:
?Flower Garden? and ?White on Black? suggest that racism is a learned phenomenon. In what ways
do these two stories reveal that one is educated into or out of racist behavior? Do the texts agree or
disagree in this assessment of learning or unlearning racist behavior? What do these texts reveal
about the persistence of such behaviors and the possibilities of change?
