Guidelines for the Research Paper Soc 304
Length. The minimum is ten pages. You can write as long as you like. But you will be penalized if you write fewer than ten full pages.
Directions. You need to use a sociological theory to explain a specific type of deviance. In this guideline, I use “Substance Use and Abuse in the Entertainment Industry: A Subcultural Perspective” as an example. Follow Shaw’s model in Substance Use and Abuse: Sociological Perspectives. Introduction: In about one page, (a) introduce your topic of deviance “substance use and abuse in the entertainment industry”; (b) explain why and how you can apply the subcultural perspective and its theories to explain the issue.
Literature Review/Sources of Inspiration: In about two pages, (a) review the existing literature; and (b) show what has been studied and what remains to be studied on your issue, “substance use and abuse in the entertainment industry,” especially from a subcultural perspective.
Theoretical Image: In about one and half pages, develop a theoretical image of your issue, “substance use and abuse in the entertainment industry,” from your chosen perspective, “the subcultural perspective.” For example, substance use is passed on from seniors to juniors, from insiders to outsiders, or from stars to starters, not only through association with acting or performing peers but also through identification with celebrity cultures and lifestyles featured in the mass media.
Theoretical Components: In about four and half pages, (a) identify major aspects/elements of your issue, “substance use and abuse in the entertainment industry.” Some of those aspects may include: the cause for spreading substance use, the process of transmitting substance use, and/or the consequence of sustaining substance use; and (b) explain each of those aspects, in detail, using one or more theories of the subcultural perspective.
Policy Implications: In about two pages, offer specific suggestions to media executives, entertainment stakeholders, health professionals, and/or entertainers themselves regarding subculture, substance use, and behavioral change.
Conclusion: In about half a page, conclude your paper with its major points (findings and arguments). Point out if there are any related issues to be further studied.
