I work in Accident and Emergency Department Module Aim
The aim of the module is to enable health and social care workers to enhance their understanding of ethics and the law as it is applied to health and social care and to develop ethical decision-making capabilities based on reflections arising from the work place.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, participants should be able to:
1. Distinguish between ethical and legal principles and understand the nature of the relationship between them;
2. Compare and contrast differing theoretical approaches to ethical decision-making;
3. Apply ethical and legal principles in the exploration of particular dilemmas;
4. Reflect on their own ethical rights and duties within the context of shared decision-making with service users.
Indicative Module Content
The module will include the study of the major ethical theories as well as post modern approaches. It will specifically focus on the use of ethical principles to help resolve issues in health and social care through the detailed examination of specific cases. Included within the module will be the study of the nature and sources of law, the functions of the civil and criminal law both at statute and within common law boundaries. Participants will be able to discuss the nature of litigation and the measures that can be employed in practice in order to avoid this. The module will draw heavily on the experience of its participants to examine ongoing legal and ethical dilemmas present in everyday practice. Discussion and debate will centre on areas such as: providing care to an ageing population, equitable distribution of resources, the value of life and the right to die, confidentiality, consent and patient autonomy, and the rights and responsibilities of practitioners.
Learning and Teaching Strategies
This taught module brings participants together to share experiences of practice in the context of relevant theory. Sessions will be interactive with theoretical propositions being explained, clarified and tested by individuals in a facilitative, inter-professional seminar environment.
