Format: Point form

TASK: This involves selecting an area of current policy concern to the government, which you are to follow throughout the semester. You are required to select a role relevant to the area selected, and then report developments and outcomes from the point of view of that role in the final week. Marks will be given based upon preparatory work, the meeting of Week 5 and Week 9 requirements and the final brief presentation.

You are able to choose your own policy area from the areas with which the government is most concerned. These areas are generally laid out at the opening of Parliament in the Governor-General’s Speech. For example, his speech at the opening of the 2004 Parliament included the following issues:

Maintaining a strong economy
Getting more people into work
Labour market reforms
Education and skills development
Building an enterprise culture
Modernising industry regulation and infrastructure
Comprehensive trade policy agenda
National security and Australia ‘s place in the world
Supporting families, carers and women
Choice and peace of mind in health care
Human services
Regional Australia
Indigenous affairs
Veterans
Environment
Other possible areas which overlap these and can be considered current policy concerns of the government might also include:

National Security/Terrorism (including Foreign Affairs, Defence and Nuclear Policy
Economic Policy (Telstra sale, Tax reform and Trade)
Industrial Relations
Immigration
Welfare
Health
Employment
You should select a field of interest and then select an ‘actor’ within your chosen field. The ‘actor’ may be an individual (e.g. a government minister, the head of an organization, an individual activist etc.) or an organization (e.g. minor party, think-tank, environmental organization, Government, Opposition etc). This will be the ‘role’ you will follow over the course of the semester, and on which you will report in Week 13 as the conclusion to this exercise.

Your report should be written from the point of view of the ‘actor’ involved and should include mention of the actions of others which impinge on the actor as they try to carry out their part in relation to the policy area chosen. This means you will need to think about and pay attention to strategy. The media (newspapers, magazines, television) will be a rich source of material for this project, as well as the internet.

Your ‘role’ may be active in the Parliament, in the media, on Commissions, through formal reports, at meetings, think-tanks, lobby groups, even demonstrations. You will need to follow it throughout the ten weeks, and be able to report on the various forms of activity in which it has been involved in relations to the policy area you have chose.

In week 5 you will be asked to nominate the issue and actor you are following. In week 9, you will be asked to provide a brief informal interim report on your progress. This report can be given via email or as a Discussion Post. In it, you are encouraged to raise any difficulties you might be encountering in the tracking process. Remember that no activity can be as problematic for your actor as too much activity. If you really cannot find information on the activities of your chosen actor/issue – think about why this might be the case.
