Perhaps you have heard about a state governor forming an exploratory committee to investigate running for president. When making the announcement, the candidate will most likely talk about the qualities and characteristics that make him or her different from the other candidates, in addition to specific problems or questions that the candidate feels particularly well-suited to tackle.
Like a new presidential candidate, you’ve been in the exploratory phase of your research, reviewing the literature, discovering gaps in it, contemplating some initial questions upon which you might be able to elaborate—you’re now nearing the time to make an announcement. In a dissertation, the place where you announce your intentions is the introduction.
Your in-depth analysis of particular quantitative and qualitative articles continues this week when you analyze and evaluate the articles’ introductions and purpose statements. Then, you will weave together components from last week’s examination of literature and begin to craft an introduction and purpose statement for your proposed research study.

Book Excerpt: Newman, I., Ridenour, C. S., Newman, C., & DeMarco, G. M. P. (2003). A typology of research purposes and its relationship to mixed methods. In A. Tashakkori & C. Teddlie (Eds.), Handbook of mixed methods in social and behavioral research (pp. 167-188). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.
Useful for all assignments this week, this chapter excerpt identifies nine purposes for research and ties research purposes to research methods.
Journal Article: Article A and Article B
You will again use these two articles, listed in the Article A and Article B handout (or assigned by your instructor), for Discussion. This week, you will switch your primary article focus. For example, if you were assigned Article A in Weeks 4 and 5, you will now focus on Article B.
