This subject explores management theories, practices, and issues across cultures in the context of international business. It seeks to engage students with major cultural theories of Edward and Mildred Hall, Geert Hofstede, Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner. In addition to understanding these theories, students will explore practical management problems and issues in international business through published case studies of actual experiences, incidents and reflections from international businesses across the world.
In this subject, students will be introduced to three major areas in cross-cultural management. The first concerns the organizational implications of managing across cultures; the second relates to the social implications of diverse workplaces and the third relates to the personal adjustments to working in assignments outside one’s home base.
In particular, during lectures, presentations and seminars, students will discuss major theories of culture and how these may apply across borders. In addition, other organizational and practice implications will be examined including:
• the influence of culture on management strategies, structures and systems,
• the implications of cooperating and competing with integrity across cultures, joint ventures and mergers,
• issues of equality in international business,
• organizational implications and individual experiences of culture shock in expatriation
• the implications of cultural diversity including indigenous cultures on international businesses.
On successful completion of this subject, students will have an understanding and appreciation of the current theories and concepts of culture and how these may impact international management practice.

5. Students will be able to evaluate the application of cultural frameworks to better understand the complexity of cross-cultural management in international organizations
