After reading Sartre’s essay on existentialism (Reading 93), ask yourself: is this a philosophy that could serve as a guide to my life? Give the reasons for your answer.
Create an initial thread and then respond to at least two other initial postings.
Here is the 2 others initial:
1st:Although I grasp what Sarte is trying to say in this piece of literature I am not sure that it is something I go by in my life. I do believe that we have the free will to make choices but I also believe very strongly that God is the guiding force in my life. I have always been a religious person and even though I am free to make the right choices in life I have certainly made some wrong ones as well. I do feel that in most ways our lives are pre determined and that God has a plan for us all. I think that we were given free will for a reason and that we can choose to lead to life that God has chosen for us or we can choose to go down a different path.
I understand the points that Sarte is trying to explain and I can appreciate them. I appreciate the idea of free will and that humans create their own path but I cant say I buy into the idea that there is no force, other than our own, that is controlling our lives.
2nd:I don’t think I could live by the ideas written in Sartre’s lecture. I don’t like the idea that there is no God and no ultimate significance to the universe. Sartre describes man as nothing more than what he makes of himself. He feels that there is no such thing as human nature because there is no God to have a conception of it. He explains that men are different than rocks or moss due to the fact that they no they exist and have a responsibility for themselves. He also says that men have a greater responsibility to the future of man by the decisions they choose to make. He describes that there is no defined right or wrong, only the choices we make and their consequences. Personally, I like the concept of having a responsibility to mankind as a whole, but I don’t like the absence of God in this theory. I like to believe in the existence of God, human nature, and that men are inherently good.
