The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) mandates unpaid, job-protected leave for up to 12 weeks a year to care for a new child, whether for the birth of a son or daughter, or for the adoption or placement of a child in foster care. Only employers with 50 or more employees are required to abide by FMLA. Less than half of all workers in the United States are eligible for FMLA.
There are three components to this assignment. (answer to them separately, one component-one paragraph)
1) First, research a company to find out what their leave policy is. What is the company? Are their employees eligible for FMLA? What is their family leave policy? Is it a more generous leave policy for families than FMLA (i.e. longer leave allowed, paid leave provided, etc.)? This will require an online search and possibly even some phone calls.
2) Next, pick a country. What is their family leave policy? Compare the leave policy in that country to that provided in the United States under FMLA. (Here is a link to one document with some country information, but I am sure there are others: http://www.cepr.net/documents/publications/parental_2008_09.pdf)
3) Finally, if you were in an elevator with a congressman and had one minute to talk to him/her about FMLA, what would be your recommendation about what a new FMLA would look like, and why would you change it in that way? Explain, using what we have learned so far, why it is important for families to be able to spend time at home with their new children?
After you are done with answering to the above questions, separately answer to these questions; The terrible twos and threes can be a time of stress for parents as children are exploring new found independence. As you have learned in the text, abuse occurs more for children in the toddler developmental period than children of other ages. Spanking children as a form of discipline is one of the parenting practices that causes much discussion among researchers, child development specialists, and parents. Even the definition of spanking is debatable. For this discussion board, the definition we will use is “hitting a child with an open hand on the buttocks or extremities with the intent to discipline without leaving a bruise or causing physical harm. This definition is in keeping with the definition often used to delineate spanking from more severe forms of corporal punishment.”(Benjet and Kazdin, 2003)
Do you think that spanking is detrimental to children’s development? Defend your position based on the article you read, your own experiences as a child, and any other information that would add to your ability to provide a solid argument. Did your stance change after reading the article and/or reading other discussion board postings?
