Use subheadings as you move from one section of the debate paper to the next section. Here you are with some guidelines:
1. Your opening section will explain why the topic is important (usually by showing financial impacts) and should give definitions. For example, what exactly is “National health care” (NHC)? What exactly is “Affirmative action” (AA)? I recommend you give two definitions, and this would be the place to quote from research journals or other publications. Mention how your topic relates to human resources management (HRM) by stating which HRM functions are affected and why. For example: explain how AA affects recruiting and selection; explain how NHC would affect compensation and labor costs.
2. What is the history of the topic? For this section, you are writing why AA or NHC are even considered to be debate topics, i.e. why the topics are important. Are there lawsuits or federal laws you need to discuss? This is the context of the topic.
3. Discuss the sources that support your position. Use several sources, at least five research journals but practitioners’ publications can also be used. These are the reasons why you believe your position is correct. If you find tables or figures in a publication, feel free to copy and paste as long as you give the reference. This section needs facts, facts, and more facts, rather than only opinions.

As a graduate student, you need to be able to show balance in your debate paper (and your thinking), so this is the “What the other side says” section. This section does not mean you agree with the other side, but it shows you understand their viewpoints.
5. Critique the counter-reasons: Intellectually criticize the arguments of the opposition. In #4, you wrote about what the other side thinks, now explain why the other side is wrong. What assumptions has the other side made? Did they make a statement and not back it up with facts? Are their references outdated? What are alternative explanations for any of their statements? 6. Summary. Explain in a paragraph or two why your side is correct.
To reiterate, insert your opinions as you wish, but start such a statement with something like “In our opinion….” or “We believe……” so as to identify the following statement as an opinion. The emphasis should be on facts and data. If you have not done so already, contact a research librarian. Remember you need at least five research journal references. It is better at the graduate level to have too much material than too little.
