Loss Prevention Plan Assignment (107 points):
1. Pick a scenario that you desire to pursue. The options are located in the week 3 assignments. For this week, just start putting some ideas together as you read your assignments. Next week you must finalize which specific scenario you will use.
2. Identify the areas of risk that you discern from the scenario you chose. Work up each area of risk using various sources on how to correct and mitigate your risk. You may use the text, journal articles, or reliable internet sources. You need to use a minimum of 3-4 outside resources. These should be easy to find.
3. Identify areas such as the legal ramifications of what happened, whether a sentinel event report needs to be filed, what departments need to be involved in correcting this issue, what policies may need to be changed, what training or re-training needs to occur, what disciplinary actions may be involved (be careful here, take a “systems” approach and do not just attack the individual), what insurance carriers may need to be notified, what future insurance needs may need to be addressed, etc. The above is NOT a comprehensive list, just suggestions. Check your text index for ideas of areas that need to be researched. Then identify how you are going to monitor this issue. If you don’t monitor it, it will happen again. 4. Your paper should be 5-6 pages in length, NOT including the reference pages. Write this as a formal paper, which means third person. Do not put “I think” or “we should”. Objective papers are written in the third person: “the University should establish protocols…”.
5. Make sure you adhere to APA format. There are abundant resources available to make sure you adhere to that format.
6. Hit spell check-check. I do not want to see spelling errors and grammatical gaffes. This is a higher level class, and not high school. I expect a professionally written paper. You are going into healthcare administration, and must be professional and persuasive in your writing. In a previous class I had a student misspell the name of the course right at the top of her paper.
7. You have the option in week five of turning in a rough draft. It is not mandatory. If you want your paper reviewed, you must turn it in by mid-week of week five, and I will make some suggestions for your final form. Otherwise your paper is due by the end of week six. Late papers will not be accepted.

Case Scenario
A 60-year old woman was boarded for a left craniotomy for removal of a brain tumor. She acknowledged her consent for a left craniotomy on her consent form. The operating room and operating table were set up for a left craniotomy. The patient was prepped for surgery. The neurosurgeon positioned the patient’s head for surgery.
One hour into the operation, the neurosurgeon was unable to locate the tumor. He requested that the anesthesiologist check the head position underneath the sterile field. The anesthesiologist did so and reported that the patient’s nose was facing left and that the right side of the head was being operated on. The neurosurgeon closed the incision, repositioned the head, and removed the tumor on the other side.
The patient survived the operation. The error was immediately disclosed to the patient and her family. She had neurological deficits consistent with the risks identified before surgery.
