To complete this assessment item successfully you are required to provide a written evaluation of a specified personal biography using relevant developmental theories.
Specifically you will need to;
1. Read through the case-study biography below.
2. Consider the case presented in the context of relevant developmental theories.
3. Draw out those theories across the lifespan that you think are most pertinent to the case
and provide an overview of them with a specific emphasis on how they might relate to
the case presented below. There are lots of possibilities in the theories that may be
relevant; not just with the case example for this assignment, but also with any client.
When working with a client developmentally, the counsellor may start by following
theoretical hunches, and then see if such hunches match by asking the client for help in
clarifying its relevance to them and their situation. This is because not all theories apply
to everyone all the time. Because the assignment doesn’t have the advantages of the to
and fro dialogue with the client, it is looking to have clarified your first hunch of what
developmental theories and ideas might apply to the particular case.
4. Therefore, you need to provide an argument of why you think those developmental
theories and ideas you have chosen might be the most pertinent in helping you and the
client gain insight and understanding of those things seen as most relevant.

Case Study Biography
John is a 49 year old architect. He has come to counselling because he is feeling down and
depressed. He says that he is not able to maintain any real motivation or drive towards his work
anymore and that he is feeling a general unhappiness with his life. He says he often wakes up
with this overwhelming feeling of, “what’s the point” whereby he says that he has lost sight of
the value he once held for his job and that he feels that his life is meaningless and pointless. He
says that while his job had helped to keep him financially secure he really doesn’t feel it’s of any
value anymore and wonders why he has stuck at it for so long. He sometimes even wonders
why he decided to do architecture in the first place and doesn’t feel comfortable about the
prospect of doing it for the rest of his life.
John is an only child. His father was an architect while his mother stayed at home raising him
and running the house. His father died 18 months ago at the age of 83. His mother is still alive
at 81 years of age.
John considered his father to be quite strict and a perfectionist whereby he remembers “always”
getting into trouble for messing up the backyard or leaving his toys out of their place in his
bedroom. John felt he often could not take the initiative in doing something without his dad
stepping in and fixing it or making a comment that it needed to be done better. John remembers
one time when he was about 5 years of age taking the initiative to rap his mother’s birthday
present only to have his dad scold him verbally for doing a poor job and then taking it off him to
rap the present himself.
They did used to spend a lot of time together as a family. John used to love weekends down at
the beach with his mum and dad or when they would go away camping together.
During High School John’s dad talked a lot about architecture and the great job it was. He
remembers the positive way his dad would respond whenever John mentioned that he might
decide to take it up himself. During adolescence John also felt quite insecure and confused. He
said he often felt “null and void” of any real sense of self whereby he didn’t know what to think or
believe about anything. So many things he tried out received strong disapproval from his father.
For example, his father never really liked any of John’s friends, didn’t agree with the subjects he
chose at school or the sports he took up and was always condescending towards the sort of
music John chose to listen to.
