– Read the Decameron stories in English. There is a good translation in the Penquin Classics series by G. H. McWilliam. When you have decided on the stories you wish to concentrate on, then I suggest you move to the originals and see how you manage. If you choose the Decameron assignment question, and if you are a student majoring in Italian, please make any quote from it in the original language.
– To get an idea of the breadth of human experience Boccaccio presents us with in the Decameron, I would like you to read one story of each of the “Days”: Day 1, story 2; Day 2, story 5; Day 3 story 3; Day 4 story 5; Day 5 story 9; Day 6, story 4; Day 7 story 2; Day 8 story 3; Day 9 story 2; Day 10 story 10. Please read also the Prologue to the Decameron and the author’s introduction to Day 4 where he defends himself from his critics. Some of these stories you may find a little racy, to say the least, though I’m sure you will also find that they are balanced by others of a more serious nature.
