Write a 2-3 page (750-1000 words typed, double-spaced) in which you narrate a personal experience AND explain the connection of song lyrics you choose to that experience. The relationship can work in different ways. For instance, as part of the story you are telling, hearing a certain song influenced a decision you made or an action you took. Or, hearing a song brought back a memory of an earlier experience in your life.
Your GOALS are to (a) tell the story of an incident from your life that was meaningful in some way, (b) analyze the lyrics of a song as a whole, both the singer’s “story” or situation and the meaning or “point” of the song,
and (c) explain the connection between story and song. Conclude your first paragraph with a THESIS that clearly states this connection. Your thesis FOCUSES the paper that follows.
In your FIRST PARAGRAPH, briefly introduce the story you will tell.
Also, in a few sentences, explain what the song is about, both its dramatic situation and main point. Conclude with your THESIS. Based on a song we will audit in class, here is a sample introductory paragraph:
“Love In Vain” (1937) by Delta blues master Robert Johnson is one of his best known works, partly because the Rolling Stones recorded a version of it and performed it in concert for years. “Love in Vain” is a slow, stark song of parting, loss, and a hopelessness so acute that it seems to pervade not just the singer’s situation, but the possibility of love itself. The song begins abruptly, “I followed her to the station, a suitcase in my hand.” At the end, the singer watches the train carry “her” away, almost certainly forever. When I first heard Johnson’s desolate blues, I played it over and over, partly because it recalled a painful separation I had experienced a few years before at the Southern Railroad station in Charlottesville, Va. As her train rolled off, I sensed that, given an unwelcome surprise earlier that day, my lady friend and I were finished and unlikely to see each other again.
OUTCOMES/CRITERIA: BODY PARAGRAPHS will DEVELOP your THESIS. Tell your story and analyze key lyrics. Include some quotes, but you need to explain what the quotes are saying and connect them to your story. Papers that tell a story and simply “stick in” some quotes along the way (doing nothing with them) will not succeed. Clearly ORGANIZE your
presentation. Follow the CONVENTIONS of Standard Written English and M.L.A. format. Better papers show a mature, fluent STYLE.
PICKING A STORY –As in Assignment #1, focus on a key incident that you narrate in detail. Please, no stories about death, disease, divorce, or personal breakdowns. Songs of “lost” loves or friendships are OK, since these experiences are common and we survive them, often to our advantage.
PICKING A SONG: your success depends partly on the song you choose.
One that, in its particular way, reflects a common human experience is a good bet. Million$ have been made on the vicissitudes of love, its beginning, its end, and critical moments along the way, such as the one immortalized in Gerry Goffin and Carole King’s “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.” In class, we will audit several songs to suggest possibilities.
