Thematic Paper Guidance:
In your syllabus you find the following statement:
“Complete a thematic paper that traces one of the biblical themes from the list below noting developments of that theme in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. Include the continuity in the development of the theme as well as any changes in meaning. Note any areas of disputed understanding. This paper must be accompanied by an outline. The paper needs to be well-documented. Be certain to distinguish between paraphrase and quotation. This paper should be between 1,650 and 2,000 words in length. Please use APA or MLA format. The thematic paper is worth 25% of the course grade and is due in Module 3.”
Lets unpack that statement a bit. After you choose the theme (from among the list provided in your syllabus) you are to note examples of that theme as used within the Old Testament (chapter, verse) and along with this you will want to discuss how the theme was used, possible meanings of the theme or topic (For instance in your reading and research, you may find that the theme has more than one meaning/definition), possible applications or uses by the biblical writers, e.g., ways in which the biblical writers used and applied the term/concept within concrete situations; any change in meanings of the term, etc. You will then want to take the same theme and describe how it was used/noted within the New Testament, provide a few specific examples of New Testament usage, determine and discuss if there is a change in meaning/usage of the theme within the New Testament as compared/contrasted with its usage in the Old Testament, and provide a concluding paragraph in which you give your analysis of the theme (significance for biblical times and for now, possible applications, religious/theological implications, etc.). The development of a detailed outline is crucial to the success of this assignment. You will then want to use that outline to provide the headings (and subheadings) within the body of your paper. A reference list or works cited is necessary at the end of your work, and the use of in-text citations are required with material is directly quoted (quotation marks and citation required) and paraphrased (known as indirect quotations). Please note that you should use and reference academic sources rather than strictly popular sources, i.e., religious tracts, etc. (Bible dictionaries, while appropriate to use do not count as academic sources). Also it is important that while your reading and research should be used to inform and shape your work, it should not comprise the bulk of your paper. For instance, you should aim at writing a paper where no more than approximately 15-20% of the material is comprised of direct or indirect quotations. Please remember that a string of direct/indirect quotations (referenced or not) “does not an essay make.” I want to read your work, but your work that is developed out of your reading and research. At all cost, please avoid the temptation to copy and paste.
