Style and Citation instructions for assignment:
Use a separate title page for your name, student number, the assignment number and type: e.g. “Assignment One: Book Report” course number, date, and my name. Do not number the title page. On the next page of your assignment (p. 1 of your review), copy the title of your book at the top of the page using The Chicago Manual of Style (a copy of this text is available as an e-book in the Carleton library). An example of the CMS style for a book with more than one editor is as follows (be sure to include the number of pages and illustrations at the end of your citation):

Then leave two lines before beginning your review. Double space each line and indent your paragraphs. Be sure to number your pages at the bottom and include your name in the upper right hand corner of each page. For this assignment you may use the “in-text” reference method of author and page number in brackets, e.g. (Tulloch, 108). The year of publication is not required unless you are referring to books, articles, etc., other than the text chosen for your book review, e.g. (Tulloch 2006: 108). You are writing a critical book review which does not mean you write a negative report on everything the author says.
The following steps will help you to analyze your book of choice. Answer the questions in point form; your answers will form the raw research for your review. You will need to organize this research before you begin to write. See the section below on How to write a book review? Be sure you consult the Evaluation Rubric also below before you begin to write.
Questions:
1. Look over the book and note the author(s) and their function. Is there more than one author? If so, can you clearly identify the author of each chapter? Who is/are the author(s)? What expertise does she/he bring to the project? (You might have to google the author’s scholarly home page.) If you are working with an edited collection, who is/are the editor(s)? How many contributors to the volume are there? How is the volume organized? By sub-topics? By time-lines? Other?
2. Note the book’s features, e.g. table of contents, chapter titles, footnotes or endnotes, index, illustrations, tables, glossary, bibliography. How do these features aid the reader?
