The goal of this writing assignment is to develop a case study based on a disease or disorder that involves hormones. I encourage you to research lesser-known conditions that might affect smaller subsets of individuals, such as early development (children), sex-specific, genetic disorders, etc- something that you don’t typically hear a lot about in your psychology or biology classes. Consider also conditions that might result due to the loss of an enzyme that might be critical for the synthesis of a particular hormone. While the narrative itself will give the reader insight into the afflicted individual (their age, occupation, personal life, family history, symptoms, diagnosis, ability to get medical care and what treatment options are available, etc), the case study should also focus on an underlying psychobiological underpinning of the condition from a hormonal perspective. To this end, you can incorporate basic science findings that have led to our understanding of the condition. Your narrative story can be true or fictitious. If you use a true story, you must cite the reference.
The case should be two pages, single spaced, one-inch margins, 10-12 pt font (except titles), any font you choose. The following components need to be included:
1. A story element, based around an individual or group, community, population 2. A brief history of that individual 3. Background on the disorder 4. 2-3 small figures of structures, pathways, etc and/or people involved
5. A section that ties the story, the disease and your underlying hormonal underpinning together 6. 4 critical thinking questions that the reader will answer (not included in the 2 pages) 7. References (not included in the 2 pages)
Your case will receive a higher grade the more your audience (other students in this class) is required to think through your questions. Take into account that your audience has additional knowledge gained from the course that they can use to answer your questions. Thus, you do not need to include everything in your case study to answer your questions, though the problem should be solvable using course material. You are not required to find primary literature as references, though use of them will help improve the breadth of your case study.
