1. Describe the theme/topic selected for your essay (Hint: Read through the Contents
section of your textbook for ideas).
2. Overall, what do your chosen articles have in common? How are they linked to one
another?
3. What information do you expect for your reader to gain by reading your essay? (Hint:
Do not assume that you are writing this paper exclusively for the Instructor/TA.
Instead, target your writing to an educated audience such as your classmates.)
Part II (roughly four pages, one page/article, double-spaced): The second part of this
essay will ask for you to briefly summarize four primary and peer-reviewed articles’– no
quotations please. What we are looking for (and what you’ll be marked on) is how well
you seem to understand what each article is saying – what were the researchers
investigating? Were there any hypotheses/predictions (If no hypothesis/prediction is
clearly stated – what in your opinion is the research question?) What was the
methodology? What was found?
Note: you are not expected to summarize the statistical techniques presented in each
paper. However you should have a thorough understanding of the results and
implications.
Please only select articles you easily understand.
Part III (roughly two pages, double-spaced): The third part of this assignment will
require for you to get creative! Imagine you have been informed that researchers
working with the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) have read your work.
They wish to meet with you in person and hear about your thoughts on the future of
research based on experiments presented in your assignment. Remember that generally
authors try to highlight strengths of their research in publications; however there is
always room for improvement. After reading the four articles, design an experiment
you would recommend (during your meeting) as the “next step” to the experiments
presented in Part II of your essay.
Remember, making general statements is not enough. Explicitly state the research
question you plan to address. Describe the methodology – how would you go about
testing (collecting data) for your proposed experiment? What type(s) of subjects would
you recruit for the experiment? Why? What type(s) of results might be obtained? What
will these results tell us about your research question? You are encouraged to generate
your own questions as additions to the list provided above.
