Poverty effects on crime can be addressed for a number of reasons: There is a higher rate of mental illness among the poor, poverty leads to stress; therefore, impoverished individuals commit theft, robbery or other violent acts. Poverty leads to a lack of education, jobs, and role models and this increases the probability of adolescents hanging out on the streets and associating with gangs. Impoverished individuals turn to crime as a way to obtain material goods that they cannot obtain legally. Often threat helps them to acquire more goods, this persuades them to commit violent acts such as robbery. Increases in poverty lead to increased violent crime.
