5. Discuss the correlation between poverty and violent crime.

Poverty and income inequality are each associated with violent crime. Homicide and assault may be closely associated with poverty or income inequality than are rape and robbery. “The ready access of a lifetime to welfare and free social service programs is a major contributing factor to the crime problems we face today”. (Global Issues, 2010). Violent crime rates have more to do with poverty levels than the race of local residence. Violent crime rates in extremely poverty stricken white neighborhoods are very similar to rates in comparable black neighborhoods. This is not a black and white issue. Poverty effects on crime can be addressed for a number of reasons: There is a higher rate of mental illness among the poor, poverty leads to stress; therefore, impoverished individuals commit theft, robbery or other violent acts. Poverty leads to a lack of education, jobs, and role models and this increases the probability of adolescents hanging out on the streets and associating with gangs. Impoverished individuals turn to crime as a way to obtain material goods that they cannot obtain legally. Often threat helps them to acquire more goods, this persuades them to commit violent acts such as robbery. Increases in poverty lead to increased violent crime.
