I have to show that:

I – I have the potential to contribute to higher education through my understanding of the barriers facing women, minorities, students with disabilities, and other members of groups underrepresented in higher education careers, as evidenced by life experiences and educational background.
Examples include but are not limited to:
– attendance at a minority serving institution;
– ability to articulate the barriers facing women, racial minorities and other groups in fields where they are underrepresented;
– participation in higher education pipeline programs such as Puente, MESA, Summer Research Opportunity Programs or McNair Scholars.

II – I have demonstrated significant academic achievement by overcoming barriers such as economic, social or educational disadvantage (this is an important point, since I came from a developing country (Cameroon) where the conditions are suboptimal, particularly in Science. But I successfully competed for scholarships and fellowships that allow me to pursue my graduate studies and scientific career abroad in developed countries; See my C.V.).

III – I have the potential to bring to my academic research the critical perspective that comes from my understanding of the experiences of groups historically underrepresented in higher education or underserved by academic research generally.

IV – I need to articulate how my scientific research has the potential to serve the needs of groups that have been historically underserved by academic research.

V – In addition to my primary field of interest in science (Biology), I have the potential to make research contributions to understanding the barriers facing members of groups who have been historically underrepresented in these fields in higher education.
For example,
– Studying patterns of participation and advancement of women, racial minorities and other groups in academic fields where they are underrepresented;
– Evaluating research programs, curricula and teaching strategies designed to enhance participation of students from groups underserved by higher education.

VI – It is mentioned that applicants who have had significant postdoctoral experience may be given less consideration and they should address their circumstances in their application. This is unfortunately my case and I need to turn this disadvantage into advantages.
Here are some ideas:
a) With my several years of postdoc experiences, this fellowship is an ideal opportunity for me to engage my transition into an independent investigator (faculty) position.
b) Despite the fact that I have already spent several years as a postdoctoral researcher, the experiences I have gathered from different countries/different cultures/different people … etc… allow me to be an ideal leader and advocate of diversity in higher education etc… any other interesting ideas…
