Historical Empathy Project Custom Essay

For many, history is a series of useless names, dates, and events too numerous to recall.
For others the events and people of the past are intertwined in an ongoing narrative that connects our past and present. Your task is to tell a story based on historical facts (not on fiction), but in the end your essay will be a piece of historical fiction. This is an opportunity for you to show your creative side.
Your Task:
You must place yourself or a fictional character you create in the time period or event you have selected. You cannot be a historical figure yourself… i.e., you cannot be Augustus, but your character could be Giuseppe, an imperial guard assigned to protect the emperor.
You may select any time period or event we cover this semester in HI 101 that you are interested in learning more about.
Next, research the time period or event to gain a full understanding of the people, and culture of that time in history. Doing so will aid you in becoming well versed on your topic.
Then write an essay in which you include a description of what daily life would be like, what traditions, practices, or cultures dominated the period you selected; or what local governments might have looked like. Keep your essay as descriptive as possible, while remaining historically accurate.
Your essay should clearly describe the event, region, city, town, or village you have chosen as your setting for your narrative. It will not suffice that you simply describe / list historical events; your description needs to be imbedded within your narrative, i.e., you must tell an interesting historical story.
As well, you should be able to describe how you see yourself or your character fitting into this period or event. Some basic questions to consider:
What role would you play in the community?
How would you have survived?
What work would you be doing?
What contribution would you have made?
Remember to keep your descriptions historically accurate. It will not suffice to say that you would have introduced new technology like your cell phone to your neighbors living in Ancient Mesopotamia. Be authentic and empathic… try walking in the shoes of another as you transport yourself to the days of old.
Remember, history is a narrative… and good history makes the best story.
Some additional advice I will offer… is to begin your research ASAP!…Make sure the time period or event you select has enough information available to you (i.e., primary and secondary resources) … the worst thing you can do is to pick an obscure event without making sure you can find enough material to complete your research and write your essay effectively.
Final Essay Requirements:
Your essay should:
Be no more than ten typed pages in MLA or Chicago Turabian style.
Contain proper in-text citations and a bibliography.
Your bibliography should include a minimum of three primary resources and six secondary resources. You may consider your textbook as one of your secondary resources.
Your bibliography should not be counted in your minimum page requirement.
In selecting resources for your essay… you may not use Wikipedia and other non-educationally sponsored websites.
Appropriate web resources include:
University and college pages created by professors of history, philosophy, anthropology, or sociology (these are website addresses that end with .edu with the site’s creator/s noted).
Educational Websites like: PBS, BBC, The History, A& E Biography, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, or News websites (i.e.,MSNBC, CNN, FOX, ABC, and CBS)
Historical periodicals (JSTOR, ARTstor, …)
Government supported websites and/ or Museum websites (the Smithsonian, the National Archives, Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Eternal Egypt, the Louvre Museum, the State Hermitage of Russia, etc). If you are not sure if your online resource is acceptable, email me and ask… do not assume it is.
Bibliographies containing Wikipedia or other non-educationally sponsored resources will cause your essay to receive a failing grade. Any research essay is only as good as its sources. Simply put… junk in, is junk out! And I do not like to read junk.
Generally speaking web addresses that end with .com are not acceptable for your essay; while web addresses ending with .edu, .gov and some .org are usually the sites you want to use. My best advice is to use historical periodicals provided through the Library’s online journals.
When writing your essay, please note:
Your essay is to be considered a piece of formal writing… this means no “text lingo;” and no “contractions.”
Your essay should be proof read for clarity, checked for grammar and spelling and contain a bibliography.
I expect to receive original work that is a final version only.
