Q1: You are a sociologist, and you’ve just been invited to give a presentation to a 12th grade class at your old high school. You’ve been asked to discuss the gist of what you’ve learned lately in one of your latest courses here at UCR and you’ve chosen (surprise, surprise!) the sociology of economic organizations. Use the syllabus to help you select three (3) topics that we have covered from the fifth (5th) week onward (The New Walmart, Deviance & Crime, Justice, etc.) that you’ll cover in your talk. You must select topics for which we have an actual reading (required or optional), as you are required to cite from them in developing your speech. Remember that the most convincing presentations mix cited, underlined conceptual material with cited, concrete evidence and examples discussed in the readings that match the topics you’ve chosen.
Q2: (2 pages) Using our readings (from the beginning): you’ve been asked by management to design the most controlled and stratified work environment possible for their employees. Be sure to employ both socio-structural and agentic factors at various levels (micro/meso/macro). Don’t just TELL me what your company is like (“people are unequal, the workday is 16 hrs long, the bosses constantly stare over your shoulder, etc.”); show how nine (9) cited, underlined terms, concepts, principles, and theories can be used to create such a workplace.
Q3: (2 pages ) Analyze your own workplace (any current or former job) as a hierarchy and network. 1) Provide a simple diagram (see next page)* that illustrates the network/relationships of all the actors (supervisors, employees, etc. doctors, etc.); 2) briefly explain how homophily and clustering (triadic closure) did/did not operate there; 3) briefly discuss how a few of the actors in that network benefit or are disadvantaged by their position in the network (as opposed to explaining it by their individual characteristics/attributes); and 3) briefly explain how their attributes/characteristics interacted/combined with their network position to result in an increase/decrease/no change in that same player’s influence in that network. Be sure to use cites from our reading(s) to substantiate each of your claims.
Q4: (2 pages)Apply our course readings on two of these four topics (shadow structures, professionals, justice, trust) to the video we will watch in class (TBA). Be sure to use cites from our reading(s) to substantiate each of your claims.
