Mr. Stone, an architect in his early 40s, has just inherited $1 million from his recently deceased father. The inheritance will come in the form of a wire transfer directly to Mr. Stone’s bank account. Mr. Stone has been living comfortably on his wages but has little investment knowledge. Mr. Stone has hired you to design and recommend an investment portfolio for his newly received inheritance. Your assignment has two components; a one page written recommendation describing the portfolio design and how you expect it to perform for Mr. Stone, and secondly, an Excel spreadsheet showing the selected stocks and how they will react if the market goes up or down 10% over the next year.
Your spreadsheet must list the selected stocks, their price per share, beta, dividend (if applicable), number of shares and total investment by share. Your spreadsheet must show how the portfolio will perform if the market goes up 10% and conversely, the result if the market drops 10%. This performance data must include the absolute dollar value of the portfolio under both situations as well as the percentage return on the portfolio. Assume that dividends per share do not change over the year in question. Also, please provide the composite beta for your portfolio. The portfolio must have a minimum of 15 stocks and a maximum of 20. The stocks selected must be listed on an exchange and have a publicly recognized beta. You may not select mutual funds, ETFs or bonds; stick to stocks. Report the date you used to derive your stock price.
