A claim of fact which establishes that a problem exists
Definitions of key terms
A claim of value to establish that the proposed course of action is desirable
A discussion of opposing viewpoints
Strong support: Once you have developed a thesis statement, consider your supporting evidence and carefully select material that will concisely support your argument. Do not merely patch together sources. This argument is your contribution to the conversation. Refer to others’ contributions sparingly to support your own. Support should consist of the following:
• facts, statistics, examples
• expert opinions
• appeals to needs and/or values
• Length: Eight to ten pages
• Format: MLA, 12 point Times New Roman
• Use at least three academic sources as primary or secondary support. (No Wikipedia)
• Summarize, paraphrase or quote sources as support for your argument
• Use MLA in-text citations and signal phrases correctly
• List sources in a Works Cited (MLA format) page at the end of your paper
• Print out appropriate sections of source text used, highlight passages you used, and turn in with final draft.
• For an article from the website, print the article, and reference the website on your Works Cited page.
• For print sources, submit publication data, title page and photocopy of pages used.
