A critical response is designed to provide insight into the Info System implications of business decisions or challenges. Each is based on a magazine, newspaper, or journal article, and should directly address the implications of a business or current affairs topic that has an IS element to it. For example, what are the IS implications of a shipbuilding contract? Or, what are the IS implications of social media use in agriculture?
The words ?critical? and ?response? are deliberately-chosen. ?Critical? implies the use of your newly-acquired knowledge in information systems and applying a leavening of common sense and insight. ?Response? implies that the work submitted is not merely a summary of or repetition of the source material, but represents your personal insights to the source material. A brief summary of the source material may be appropriate, but, with a two page maximum for the critical response, brevity is crucial.
Format and Guidelines
? Maximum of two pages, double-spaced, using twelve point font and one-inch margins.
? Use a business writing style (i.e., not APA or MLA format).
? Must be submitted in hard copy at the beginning of the class it is due with a copy of the original source material that inspired the critical response.
? If using non-textual source material for the critical response, please limit the duration to three minutes, or identify the relevant three-minute section.
Keys to Success
? Write a critical response on a topic about which you are interested and passionate?you likely have greater insight and ideas about it than a topic which you are less interested in.
? Choose source materials that are generally less technology-centric. Technology-centric source materials tend to limit the ability to critically respond to the article, because many of the concepts are explicitly stated in a technology-centric source.
? Use different course concepts as you write each critical response?draw on some of the higher-order concepts covered in class, rather than the core concepts.
