This assignment is the fourth planning and gathering component of the course project. The assignment has two parts: identifying school resources and incorporating community involvement. For this assignment, work with your school improvement planning committee and school staff to complete the activities described below, then write a paper that summarizes your involvement in all of the activities and presents the results of those activities. Step 1 – Identifying School Resources Identify resources (such as fiscal, time, human, and material resources, as well as new resources) that will be needed to manage each of the identified goals of your school improvement plan. Determine what will be needed to manage each of the resources effectively. Be sure to consider technological strategies for school management and scheduling, as they relate to the goals of the school improvement plan (ELCC 3.3). Step 2 – Incorporating Community Involvement Most principals organize a type of school leadership team to help with decisions related to leading the school effectively. A school’s leadership team might be called a site-based management team or a leadership cabinet. Keep in mind that the school leadership team may not be the same as your school improvement planning committee. Some members of these teams may participate in both groups, but that is not always the case. Address how the school’s leadership team should engage critical stakeholders in the community, and develop a community partnership plan that will benefit both the school and the community partners. As you address community involvement, include the following: Collaborate with Families and Other Community Members Collaborate with your committee to plan how participation will be garnered from families and community stakeholders—including business, religious, political, and service organizations; higher-education institutions; the media; and health, social, and other services—to achieve the goals outlined in the school improvement plan. Using the plan, set up meetings to collaborate with families and other community members to identify and use public information, issues, and trends that impact collaborative efforts with the families and community members. Plan to document the outcomes of all meetings (ELCC 4.1). Respond to Community Interest and Needs Determine steps for responding to community interests and needs by working with the community, including those with conflicting views, to capitalize on the diversity of the school community, in order to enhance the school improvement goals and meet the diverse needs of all students. Be sure to address programs that serve students with special and exceptional needs (ELCC4.2). Mobilize Community Resources Determine how the school will take advantage of school and community resources, such as youth services and social service agencies, to support student achievement, to solve school problems, and to achieve the goals outlined in the school improvement plan. Be sure to include the use of public resources and funds and steps to solicit support and new resources from the community (ELCC4.3). Note: Do not try to complete this assignment in isolation. Talk with the principal and other leaders or stakeholders. Ask pertinent questions to help your formulate your response to the requirements above. Discuss the types of resources (fiscal, time, human, and material) available to the school. Also, begin discussions about the role of the community in school improvement efforts. Keep in mind that the community encompasses a plethora of stakeholders that support the school’s efforts. Do not wait until the last minute to communicate with these stakeholders. Assignment Deliverables Write a paper that includes the following: A summary of your involvement in working with your school improvement planning (SIP) committee and school staff to identify school resources that will be needed to manage your SIP. A list of the resources identified and an explanation of how those resources should be managed. A summary of your involvement in working with your SIP committee and school staff to develop a community partnership plan. An explanation of how community partnership will be garnered. An outline of how you will respond to community needs and capitalize on community diversity. An outline of how you will mobilize community resources to achieve the goals of the school improvement plan. Assignment Requirements Your paper should be 3–4 pages in length.
