Evaluation/Timed Writing Question Prompt In a closed-form thesis-based essay, evaluate which article is more effective and makes the better argument concerning equality and fairness: Anna Quindlen’s “Uncle Sam and Aunt Samantha” (on pp. 255-57 in your book), or The Economist magazine’s editorial, “Inequality and the American Dream” (pp. 257-59). Analyze why you think this is so, and explain it. Compare and contrast the two articles, perhaps by looking at such factors as tone, form, and subject matter, as well as use of rhetorical appeals. While you should make extended reference to at least one of the pieces, remember to summarize both. Illustrate the pieces enough so that the reader would be able to follow the major supporting points you make in relation to each without necessarily having read the original articles. Brainstorm for in-class timed writing on 11/27 using the following guidelines: Ch. 9 concepts on essay exams we reviewed in class, the planning schema on pp. 299-303, 1st paragraph on p. 304, “Strategies for Developing an Evaluative Claim” table and “Shaping and Drafting” section on p. 306, and Fig. 10.6 on p. 307.
