Slavery was practiced in Africa, Europe, Asia and America before the beginning of the Atlantic slave trade. In the early 16th century the process of slave trade was first encountered. This transportation was carried on till 19th century. The slaves were taken from the western and central part of the continent and were traded with the Europeans across the Atlantic Ocean. They were sold by the Africans and bought by the Europeans and the main purpose of this trade was to use them as labors, servants and merchandise them with other goods and cargoes. (Emory, 2009).
· Role of the Africans
The main trade begun from the African side, Africans themselves started to sell their captive or prisoners of war and played a major role in the slave trade. They were selling these slaves to the European buyers. In that era this was the common practice by the Africans. The Africans considered the prisoners as one of the outsiders and was not considered as the part of their ethnic groups because they came from the enemy side and the main purpose of selling them was to lower the crime that was caused by those prisoners in that area.
· Role of the Europeans
Europeans were the first who encouraged slave trade because they were the market of the slaves. The bought slaves from the coastal outpost and shall be traded there. Along with the African the Europeans helped them in kidnapping people for trade at gun point or by conducting frequent raids. Europeans took an advantage of taking the prisoners from Africa as they lacked prison for their own personal needs (Emory, 2009).
