Guidelines for Writing Research Papers.

4. Analyse the terms of the essay question thoroughly before you begin answering the essay. It is absolutely crucial that you define the central terms of your essay.
5. You can choose an alternative essay title if you don’t like the set titles, but you have to discuss it with your instructor first.
6. Every major point that you make has to be supported by quotations or paraphrases from primary and/or secondary texts.
7. If you are analysing poetry, you are expected to quote a lot from the primary source and provide close, attentive readings.
8. Never quote anything without providing adequate analysis.
9. Never quote long passages without providing in-depth analysis.
10. Only academic writing will be counted as valid secondary sources. You cannot include short, anonymous internet essays in your list of references.
11. You should include between 5 and 10 sources in your list of works cited.

13. Ideally, you should go to through at least two drafts of your essay before you submit your final draft. Try to get a colleague to also proofread your draft for you.
