English 201 Final Exam Part 2 – Essay
In Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” we read an argument that breaks many of the rules we followed this semester while, at the same time, using the exact same tools. It hides its thesis while seeming to argue for an action that will never be performed by the audience, seems to misread the audience’s objections, and openly insults its purported audience. However it does so by
-compiling evidence and logical support (logos)
-delivered with a concerned, rational sense of respectability (ethos)
– in order to fiercely maneuver the audience’s emotional response (pathos)
– over a dire, immediate issue (kairos).
Once you identify the Rogerian structure, isolate the levels of audience response, and find the real thesis, you can enjoy the very real proposal hidden here with only small effort.
In the Colbert Report clip, “The Word: Gateway Hug,” you see that this same implicit argumentative form is in practice, using irony to hide the central argument by satirizing the opposition’s claims. Historically, this form is known as Juvenalian satire which Wikipedia (remember to never use Wikipedia as a source, never-ever) defines as “contemptuous and abrasive [and] addresses social evil through scorn, outrage, and savage ridicule. This form is often pessimistic, characterized by irony, sarcasm, moral indignation and personal invective, with less emphasis on humour.”
For your final essay, you need to use a minimum of 500 words to create your own modest proposal–an implicit, satirical argument. You must use one authoritative source (not Wikipedia) and it must be accurately and completely cited; the source can be used to support or oppose any part of the argument you wish. Your topic must remain inside the field of education but you can choose whether you want to reuse your topics from essays #3 and #4 (ex. Rather than writing about how to stop plagiarism again, you could present that thesis that “Female students should be allowed to plagiarize because their degrees will never afford them the same pay as their male counterparts anyway.” Of course, by doing so you could use that thesis to build the technically unstated, Swiftian argument that female students, in particular, have more responsibility to behave respectably for these same reasons).
Your grade (up to 90 points) depends on how well you can use the tools you have learned this semester to write a subversive, implicit, and satirical proposal essay. You will also be rewarded for creativity, insight, and confidence of tone.
Note: because I do not want the psychic guilt of accidentally encouraging you to use this assignment to write anything overtly racist, sexist, homophobic, religiously intolerant or otherwise identifiable as hate speech
