Required length: 2-3 pages (you may exceed this length, if necessary, but be concise and get to the point)
General Description/Objectives of Assignment: In this paper, you will critically apply concepts or theoretical perspectives covered in the course in reflecting on an important event or situation from your adolescent or emerging adult life (or alternatively, the life of someone you know well). You will describe the context of the event or situation, your response to it, and how it impacted your subsequent development. An A paper will use conceptual content from the course to provide a more in depth understanding. In other words, rather than simply citing an event or situation in your life as being an example of a concept, use the concept to explain it in a new way. A straightforward means of doing this would be to describe how you understood the event before, and how this contrasts with your understanding now, with the benefit of selected conceptual material. You should choose concepts and perspectives that help to place the event and your response in their broader biobehavioral, developmental, and sociocultural context.

Guidelines:
1) Really use the perspective or construct to help understand the life event(s) and situation(s) you choose to describe in a new way. Dont, for example, simply say that the event you are describing is an example of the construct, without detailing exactly how, and why this is important.
2) You should be able to explicitly describe specifically how considering the event(s) or situation(s) in light of the perspective has changed your understanding. For example, in what way would you have described the significance developmentally of the event/situation in your life before, and how now?
3) Please choose a specific theoretical perspective or concept (see examples below)
4) Please tie your reflections directly to perspective or concept and its related research. Obviously, you cannot summarize specific studies in detail in such a short paper, but your comments should be anchored in the theory or concept you have selected.
5) Conversely, avoid simplistic attributions (e.g., such as it all depends on the individual)
6) Make sure that you discuss the multiple contextual levels that might be relevant in applying the concept or theory to the selected event or situation (think Bronfenbrenner!)
7) DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. DO NOT QUOTE. USE YOUR OWN WORDS.

Examples of Theoretical Perspectives/Concepts:

Chapter 1: identity exploration, ecological validity, modified storm and stress
Chapter 2: genotype environment effects, non-shared environment, parent-adolescent distancing at puberty
Chapter 3: formal operations, postformal operations (or specific examples such as dialectical thnking)
Chapter 4: Kohlberg or worldviews approaches to moral development, Moralistic Therapeutic Deism
Chapter 5: Differentiation vs. Integration, actual vs. ideal self, psychosocial moratorium, identity statuses
Etc

Grading: Papers will be graded on a 1 to 5 scale. To receive a 5, students must: 1) coherently and accurately discuss the theoretical perspective or concept considered; 2) integrate the perspective in explaining the chosen event or situation so that the resultant synthesis describes it in a novel way; 3) be thoroughly grounded in the concept or perspective and related research, rather than using these as a jumping off point and then sharing personal impressions unrelated to the conceptual material.
