Guidelines for Writing the Capstone Project as a Business Report
Overview
Whether you work for a large company or a small business or own your own venture, you will be writing business reports. There are a number of different generic types of business reports including business plan, business proposal, marketing plan, strategic plan, business analysis, project report, project analysis, project proposal, project review, and financial plan. Business reports vary in length from a one-page memorandum to a corporate annual report of over 200 pages. For this capstone assignment, your report will be approximately three pages. (See checklist below.)
In your business report for the capstone project in this course, you should write in a clear and concise tone and use a professional format. In addition, you must include specific deliverables; that is, the requirements of the project such as addressing key issues, describing findings, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations.
Process
You should start by developing an outline for your report. Then you should developing headings and sub-headings from the outline and begin to fill in the text. (See the sample report format in the next section.) During your research, you will find information that fits into any of the sections of the report.
Before you prepare any section of the report, you might create a skeleton document using this outline. At this point, the document is essentially a sequential series of headings and sub-headings with blank space between them. You’re then ready to start inserting text into the blank spaces after each heading and sub-heading in the body of the document.
Format
It is very important to follow a proper format when writing business reports. The standard business report writing formats are help you organize your research and are easily understood by your audience.
Introduction/Terms of Reference: In the introduction, you should state what business issue/problem you are addressing. You may write the introduction first and then refine it after you have written the body of the report.
Findings/Main Body: This section of the report will be the information you have found through research.
Conclusions: The conclusions should summarize the Findings section. This area should lead naturally into the recommendations. Note: You should never include new information in the conclusions.

Recommendations: All reports should include recommendations or at least suggestions. Note:
Make sure that your recommendations clearly follow what is said in the conclusions
References: You should cite the resources you used for your research and provide enough information for the reader to find the source document. At minimum, this information includes the name of the author, the title of the document, title of publication, date of publication, and link to the document if the resource is online.

Before you submit your business report, use this checklist to ensure your work is complete.
1. Do you have a clear introduction? Does it identify the thematic and organizational structure of the report? Does it indicate your point of view or reason for choosing this topic?
2. Have you responded sufficiently (in depth) to the content required?
3. Have you organized the material effectively, that is, is the sequence of the subsections appropriate? Does your report have a neat appearance?
4. Is the presentation reader-friendly; that is, have you written with style and clarity and used the appropriate tone?
5. Do you indicate clearly the transitions from one section/theme to the next? Have you used descriptive headings and sub-headings to guide the reader?
6. Have you used relevant source material? Have you also related your material to the text? Have you carefully referenced all your sources, both direct quotations and paraphrasing?
7. Do you have a clear conclusion followed by recommendations?
8. Is your paper between 750 and 1,000 words with double spacing, one-inch margins, and a consistent font, which is Arial (10 point) or Times New Roman (12 point)?
9. Have you corrected all spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors?
