3. Now write your compare/contrast essay. This part of your paper must be at least 400 words in length.
Here are the points you should cover in your compare/contrast essay:
a. Start by briefly discussing the subject of each artwork.
b. Then describe the formal qualities of each artwork. Examine the visual elements: line, color, shape, space, light, texture, scale, etc., and then move to overall composition.
c. Now look at the style. Is it realistic? Abstract? Idealistic? Or a combination?
d. Then discuss the possible function of the artwork. What do you think the artist was trying to communicate? Be sure to clarify that this is your interpretation of the artist�s intentions. Don�t attribute ideas directly to the artist, unless you find statements or writings by that artist. (If you do research the artist and/or the artwork, remember to CITE YOUR SOURCES!)
e. Now consider the cultural context. What aspects of our contemporary world affected the making of artwork? Religion? Politics? Race? Gender? Class?
f. Finally, compare the two artworks in terms of form, style, function, and cultural context. How are they similar? How do they differ?
g. Conclude with a paragraph that sums up your ideas.
