You will write an 8-12 page, research-based argument that takes a stand on a controversial topic. You should use a minimum of ten sources in your paper. Only two of these sources can be reliable websites; the rest should be from books or the library databases.
You should choose a controversial topic to write about. You can go to the SIRS database on the library website to browse for controversial topics. You should then look for articles on your topic in the library catalog and on other databases.
Check to make sure each source you use is a credible one. Don’t forget to look for bias.
Early in your paper, you should clearly present the issue to prepare the reader to understand your argument.
You should take a clear stand on the issue in your thesis statement.
To argue for your thesis, you should give reasons for your stand on the issue, supported by examples, statistics, and expert analysis.
You should also anticipate opposing arguments as well as objections to your reasoning and respond to them by conceding or counter-arguing.
Please do not choose these topics for your paper: abortion, immigration, capital punishment, torture, gun control, legalizing marijuana, or gay marriage!!!
