This assignment is going to ask you to check the validity of one of the theories that we have covered in this class. The assignment will be a bit different depending on whether or not you choose an objective or interpretative theory. Start by choosing a theory that seems particularly interesting and heuristic to you, or perhaps one that you think you might use for senior seminar.
Regardless of which theory you choose, you must do a mini lit review. Please find at least 4-5 sources (not text books or internet web pages) about what the theory is. Briefly (in 2 pages or so) describe the elements of the theory. Please do this without citing our Griffin textbook. Find additional information to describe the theory.
Next, introduce your analysis. Explain what you will be doing.

If you choose an objective theory, your assignment is to test the validity of the theory through experiments. Remember that the goal of objective theory is to look for singular causes and capital T truth. Experiments are one way we generate objective knowledge because experiments isolate variables so we can determine “the cause” of a communication phenomenon. Your assignment is to choose an element of the objective theory and set up an experiment to test it. This can take many different shapes, and you will be graded on the creativity of your experiment and how you isolate those variables. It may be worth returning to the opening chapters of the book.
If you choose an interpretative theory, your assignment is to complete an analysis based on the interpretative theory. Rather than search for a causal relationship between variables, interpretative theory is about providing an interesting lens by which we can view a phenomenon. These are about providing productive lenses by which to look at the world. If you choose an interpretative theory you must choose a site to study. This could be an interpersonal relationship, a media text, a news event, etc. The site is up to you. Then break down the elements of the site you are studying through the theory you are using. Identify themes. Also, you must explain the value of looking at the site through the interpretative theoretical lens.
Finally (for both options), please explain what you have learned about the theory from doing this assignment.
This paper should be 9-11 pages (not including references) single-spaced pages in times new roman font. The grade breakdown is as follows:
Writing 50 (grammar, readability, writing voice, proofreading, etc.)
Content 100 (examples chosen, creativity, themes identified, relation to class material, ability to analyze, demonstration of understanding, etc.)
Structure 50 (citations, introduction, transitions, conclusion, general outline, following directions, organization, etc.)
