Sometimes we need to make decisions between two possibilities, and to choose the best option, we look for qualities or characteristics that are similar for both and for those that distinguish one choice from the other. Making an important purchase, for instance, invites us to look for similarities and differences between two or more products or services, places to visit, performances to attend, etc., according to a set of criteria. Generally speaking, the lead-in educates us (readers) about the topic of your evaluation; then, the thesis sentence identifies and forecasts the criteria used to make your decision. Sometimes a thesis sentence for an evaluation also forecasts the writer’s recommendation (see the second example below).
When evaluating one place, product, or performance, a brief outline might look like this:
