For your last paper this term, you will put into practice everything you have learned and write a paper that
argues for or against a solution to a campus or local problem.
When you argue a point, your primary goal is to get your audience to do something—change that law, buy
that item, provide a resource, etc. However, sometimes, before we even get to arguing for a solution, we
have to convince the audience there is a problem—just because we see a problem doesn’t mean that
everyone else does.
Therefore, this assignment is very different from just expressing your opinion about a topic. Simply saying
“I hate crows” is not an arguable thesis. “The crow overpopulation problem in Terre Haute poses a health
and safety danger to the population,” is both arguable and demonstrative. Most citizens of Terre Haute
would agree with that statement. However, what if someone in your audience loves crows and thinks it’s
great to have so many of them around? They might not agree with that assertion, and in order to argue
for a solution to the crow overpopulation issue, you would have to convince the readers first of all that
there is a problem with having so many crows around. Therefore, to convince an audience, you must
think very carefully about who your audience is, what they believe, what they know about the issue, and
what would benefit them regarding the issue.
The topic you will choose will be a campus or local problem that you believe you have a realistic, feasible
solution for. You may define as local either Terre Haute or your hometown if you are new to Terre Haute.
By realistic, we mean that you have a chance of actually getting the responsible parties to do something.
Your solution to the crow problem in Terre Haute may be to have the county buy everyone guns to shoot
them out of the sky, but realistically the city is not going to buy people guns or sanction that kind of
widespread hunting, especially in populated areas. A feasible solution means that it is within the realm of
possibility—especially financial possibility. With the downturn in the economy, there simply isn’t enough
money to go around—where is the money for any crow depopulation program going to come from, and
why is the crow issue more important for funding than any other issue—like education or other county
services?
Requirements:
1. Your essay must be 3-4 pages in length.
2. NO research (borrowing from outside sources). This means you must pick a topic that you can either
observe for information or allow you to gather information from people or the school on your own. The
best choices are topics you have first-hand experience with.
3. Follow MLA guidelines concerning headings, margins, font size, and line spacing.
4. Avoid logical fallacies discussed in class lectures and assigned readings.
5. All matters of evaluation used for previous papers will be applied to this assignment, so carefully
consider thesis, role and purpose, audience needs, structure, content, diction, sentence variety and
control, and technical matters.
