Remember, you are using the Pulitzer winners as a leaping off point for identifying what “works” in our culture as regards playwriting. But this topic is vast and connects to many different aspects of our society and the way our culture makes art and theatre.
We should get a sense of “where you’re coming from,” what you think is worthy of imitation, what you think is disastrous, what you think is hopeful, what you think is lazy, etc… in contemporary playwriting (and, by association, theatre in general) as reflected in the plays from the Pulitzer list.

I picked 6 works. Rabbit Hole, Ruined, Anna in the Tropics, August Osage County, Doubt, and I am My Own Wife. I chose some elements that they had in common. These elements are:
1. They are based on different cultures
2. The plots are weak- the plays are talky. A series of big emotional revelations (one exception)
3. Language is celebrated and explored
4. There is no spectacle
5. All of these make reference to other works of literature
6. All embrace mature themes and even vulgar language
This list of similarities is the outline of my paper. Under 1. culture, I spent a paragraph or so each on each play. I talked about Topdog referencing urban black culture. Ruined took place in the congo, anna was Florida cigar makers, and August was white trash okies
