Space and Otherness in Dorothy Richardson’s Pointed Roofs and the Tunnel
London is treated as a means by which her theme of self discovery is carried forward. She presents the city as a labyrinth waiting to be wandered and explored. The title Pilgrimage also reveals the fact that it is an allegorical fiction, a quest novel whose main character sets out in search of her self.
I need to discuss Richardson’s treatment of space in Miriam’s maturation process.
I argue that Richardson employs different spaces to expose Miriam’s personal growth and spiritual reflection, and that the urban space is rather used to describe Miriam’s relationship with her surroundings and to give her the chance to develop her social identity.
My analysis emphasizes the difference between material and metaphorical spaces in the text. The metaphorical use of space is to show the relation which is set up between material spaces and the people who inhabit them.
Material space: interior and exterior spaces

Exterior space: streets, church, cafés,
Importance of the titles pointed roofs and the tunnel. Pointed roofs when it’s refered to in the novel to talk about the difference houses in Germany and England. How all these different places and spaces affect Mirialm’s personal growth and maturation.
