“Iron Man” produced in 2008 was fare for escapism, using entertainment to escape the realities of daily life. “Do the Right Thing’ produced in 1989 takes place in Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn. It talks about elements of drama and comedy, depicting a truce with people of different races living in the same community. The film is filled with savage beauty and unflinching in honesty. The film is based on personal experiences with racial relations. The song “Fight to Power” says race is central to all things and the song “People” tells people are the same but we’re not; cause what we need is awareness, not to get careless. Natalie Hopkins, associate editor for theRoot.com, told National Public Radio, “Do the Right Thing’ portrayed a community didn’t respect black people and their presence in Bedford-Stuyvesant [Martin 2009]. It talks about bigotry and racism from the director point of view, Spike Lee, who understood the intricates of race not shying away from tough topics.
These two films did have an impact on society. For example Iron Man portrays how one corporation goes behind Starks back selling his weapons and have him making the weapons not knowing that he’s making them for the enemy, and that his capture was part of the plot. They did this wanting to get his technology and a way to make money while selling out his corporation and “Do the Right Thing” was based on racism where different natoinalities lived in the same community but couldn’t get along with each other. They had to learn how to live together in one neighborhood cause each race thought one was more superior than the other. Once they learned how to get along with each other and help one another they then realized it was much easier to live together and make the community a better place without fighting.
