The written assessment is expected to be your own individual work even though you may be asked to work up the assignment in a group or discuss it in class. It is essential that you abide by academic standards and that your assignment is not the result of collusion or that of plagiarism. Please see UNSW definition of collusion and plagiarism in the course notes.
You are to choose one paper from the two below to critique for this assignment.
1) Hinton, R. and Earnest, J. (2010) Stressors, Coping, and Social Support Among Women in Papua New Guinea, Qual Health Res 2010; 20; 224. DOI:
2) Liamputtong, P. et al (2003), Why Do Women Decline Prenatal Screening and Diagnosis? Australian Women’s Perspective, Women & Health, 37: 2, 89 ? 108 To link to this Article:
Your critique is to be around the concepts of rigour covered in the course and the analysis presented and argued in the paper. You are not being asked to critique the study design as such, as you may have done already in other courses ? the focus is more on the analysis, rigour and ethics of the study and its findings. You do not need to answer every question, but choose at least three you feel comfortable addressing using the literature to support your arguments.
Start by giving a brief (250 words maximum) summary of the paper chosen. Then briefly introduce the critique identifying the issues you will cover in your work. Then address three of the questions below (or ones you have devised). Finally write a brief conclusion to your critique. You may use sub headers if this is helpful in structuring your assignment. Make sure the referencing is done consistently in the APA style:

Below are some examples of questions you could ask of the paper and the analysis. You don?t have to address all the questions and you could pose other questions you think are relevant:
? How have the researchers addressed rigour and ethics in study design and methods?
? Is the approach to analysis and the techniques used well described? ? Is there theory development in the form of a step by step account of how
theoretical insights are built up?
? Are there novel claims?
? Are claims/theory development grounded in actual data?
? Is there rich description?
? Are findings transferable (note, not ?reproducible? or ?statistically generalisable?)?
? Is the analysis reflexive (i.e. do the researchers take account of the potential impact of research(er) on setting/participants)?
? Is there attention given to negative cases?
Remember, to critique something does not necessarily mean to find flaws in it, engaging critically with a paper means reflecting on the papers strengths and weaknesses. The UNSW learning centre has some good guidelines on writing critical reviews: In this course we are asking for a specific focus (above) so, after referring to the learning centre to get a general idea, be guided by what we are asking for in this assignment. Critique or critical comment is about taking a position in relation to someone else?s work and so it includes your own ideas about the paper ? this must be an argued position, not just an unsupported opinion or an assertion about your feelings on reading the paper.
Learning outcomes
