Submit the rough draft (April 21) to Smarthinking and Peer Review Board, and the final draft (May 12) to Turnitin only. You must also submit the Smarthinking feedback on the first draft to D2L by due date for the final draft (May 12). The paper loses 10 points if there was no rough draft. This paper must be at least 900 words, not including the Works Cited page, in order to receive a C. Papers without a word count at the top of the page automatically lose 5 points. Papers under 900 words can’t earn more than 69 points and won’t receive comments. Strong papers may exceed 1200 words but aim for no more than 1600. The upper end of the word count is looser for this assignment. .The bibliography and the paper should all be in the same document. If you submit two separate documents, I will ask you to resend the paper and Words Cited page as a single document and you also lose 10 points. Include the word count for just the paper itself underneath your name in the upper left hand corner of the first page.

I routinely run word counts on papers claiming to be 900 words but appearing shorter; don’t put a fictitious word count on the paper. The paper must include at least two quotations within the body of the paper and must cite at least three other pieces of information. By citing three pieces of information, you will credit the sources you used to find facts that you put into your paper, like crime statistics or population data or water contamination facts. We’ll largely use MLA style, but you can use APA style if that best suits your career goals or academic discipline. If you use APA please note this on the top of the paper, near your name.

A persuasive essay tries to sway the reader toward a particular viewpoint, stance or belief. An informative paper tends to be less challenging and is only as strong as the sources are credible. For example, if you’re writing a paper on lung cancer and rely only on popular sources like Medline, magazines or web sites designed for the lay reader, your research paper will not be successful. But if you’re writing an informative paper on lung cancer and use medical journals as sources – perhaps also an interview with an oncologist –your paper could very well earn an A. Persuasive papers are more rigorous because they require you to employ a rhetorical strategy in order to persuade, while you are also supplying information.

Topic ideas are endless! But, a good topic is also narrow enough for 900-1200 words (or a little more in this case) yet broad enough that you have something substantial and complex to argue, as opposed to stating a simple fact.
No papers on: abortion, capital punishment, steroids in sports, diseases (physical or mental, including ADHD, depression, and post-traumatic stress syndrome) or side effects of medications. If you want to write about legalizing marijuana, you must include a list of three academic sources consulted in the first draft; if the sources aren’t included, you will not be able to proceed with this topic.
