In what ways has sociology illuminated the common-sense idea that stressful life circumstances can be an important cause of ill-health? How might such knowledge be used by health professionals? Custom Essay

You will not be able to produce a satisfactory answer with lecture notes alone, and should also use at least two or three of other clearly relevant books and articles.

ii) Your essay must be carefully planned to ensure effective use of the word-limit. It should be well organized, with a brief, scene-setting introduction designed to interest the reader, paragraphs developing the argument in a logical way, and rounded off with a concise conclusion linked to the question you have chosen. In other words it should hang together and flow well. Make sure each part of the question is discussed.

iii) Try to mention one of sociologys founding fathers (Marx, Weber, Durkheim), and other major authors (e.g. Parsons, Giddens), general sociological ideas (e.g. agency, structure, culture, norm) and perspectives (e.g. symbolic interactionism) as well as more specific material. Briefly indicating your accounts relevance to nutritional issues – perhaps towards the end – is a good idea.

iv) Copying – or slightly altering – other peoples’ material (published or unpublished) whether or not the source is acknowledged is unacceptable: it is plagiarism and a very serious matter. Any evidence of this will result in the essay’s rejection, and activation of the relevant college procedures. It is also a waste of time: always try to explain ideas in your own words, and thereby get useful feedback on your understanding. Short, illustrative extracts from published sources can be effective in supporting a point, but should be included in quotation marks and their origin appropriately attributed.

v) You may include your own ideas or opinions if relevant: sometimes personal experience (e.g. how you or your family/community deal with ill-health) can provide very useful illustration of general points. However most attention and credence should be given to the contributions of relevant authorities, and these should be systematically acknowledged with appropriate references in your text. The Harvard system is recommended for this essay, citing author + date + page number, e.g. Marxist analysis considers that people’s health problems reflect the unhealthy and stressful work environments typical of modern capitalist societies (Bilton et al. 1996:420). You should always make it clear if you have read about, but did not yourself consult, someones published work, e.g. Zola (1973), summarised by Radley (1994:72-3), showed that… (and you reference Radley, not Zola).

vi) The sources you have actually read in constructing your answer should appear in a properly structured concluding reference list (remember to record the necessary information when gathering your material!). The Harvard system uses an author-alphabetical format.

vii) Tables of data, or diagrams can often provide very economical support for an argument. They should be fully labelled and titled, and their source stated.
