Attend a musical performance: a concert, an opera, a musical. Try to choose one you might not normally attend. For example, if you’ve never been to a classical concert, go to one. We’ll be discussing music in the next few weeks, and our text’s chapter on music should be a help in terms of giving you some of the vocabulary with which to approach this assignment. Here are some of the formal elements of music you can listen for:
1) tone or pitch (is the sound high or low?)
2) dynamics (is the sound loud or soft?)
3) melody (a series of musical tones in a shape the ear can recognize. Think of the repeating melody of “Jingle Bells.”)
4) rhythm (the pattern of stressed and unstressed notes)
5) form (is the piece an art song? A sonata? A hymn?)
6) instruments (is there an entire orchestra involved? Is there just one instrument featured?)
7) style (Does the music fall into a particular style: jazz, classical, baroque?)
Again, don’t be put off by what may seem like the difficulty of the assignment, especially if you’re discussing music you’re not that familiar with. Describe what you hear: use concrete language, sensory detail, and comparisons to paint a picture of the experience. Move beyond phrases like “I thought the concert was great.” Or “that was the worst music I’ve ever heard.”
